Geriatric Orthopedic Problems have assumed great significance in the recent times due to the ever increasing geriatric population, which is nearly 13% of the World population, thanks to the increase in the life expectancy of people across the globe and India. Bulk of an orthopedic surgeons practice involves this population. The challenge in treating a geriatric patient is different due to the associated multiple co-morbidities, co-musculoskeletal conditions and psychosocial problems. Treating a geriatric patient demands special skills. I started GOSI in 2009 with an intention of creating a forum which focuses on training the orthopedic surgeons to gear up to the challenges of managing a geriatric orthopedic patient.
We have successfully started a new sub-specialty in Orthopedics, Geriatric Orthopedics, and Geriatric Orthopedic Surgeons. So far we have conducted 8 International Conferences in Bangalore and prestigious and highly acclaimed institutions of India like the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, PGI Chandigarh, MGM Medical College, Aurangabad, Bangalore Medical College and other prominent places. Geriatric Orthopedic experts from all over the World have participated in these events. Recently we conducted our first ever virtual International Conference – GOSICON 2020, which was attended by over 650 delegates across the world. We have more than 1000 life members and CME’s, Workshops and community activities are being conducted all over the World and India since March 2015.
We plan to start our own research, fellowships, and journal and exchange programs. We also plan to form guidelines and protocols in the management of geriatric orthopedic problems and fragility fractures. We have formulated GOSI guidelines for the management of geriatric orthopedic patients in the Corona Pandemic. This guideline along with its ready reckoner was widely appreciated across all professional bodies and is said to be one of the best. We are also in the process of creating our own Fragility Hip Fractures database on the lines of UK and Singapore model. I would like to form many more such guidelines for the management of various geriatric orthopedic problems for both traumatic and non-traumatic conditions.
During the Pandemic we have also conducted a record number of over 40 Webinars through our sister concern, the Geriatric Orthopedic Association of India (GOAI), involving orthopedic experts across the globe and also other specialists like the physicians, endocrinologists, neurosurgeons, psychiatrists, rheumatologists, nutrition experts, legal experts etc. The webinars were very well received across the country and the globe.
GOSI,that was started with an intention of creating a forum, which focuses on training the orthopedic surgeons to gear up to the challenges of managing a geriatric orthopedic patient, is now making great strides. This society has grown in number and has a presence in almost all the states of the Country and abroad too. We hope to scale great heights with the active support of you all and other organisations across the globe.
I appeal to all to become life members of GOSI and contribute towards its growth, in the service to this vulnerable section of the society. We will be conducting our 11th International Conference at Jaipur on Oct 27th and 28th 2023. Please attend in large numbers.
